The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro

There are few books which have touched me the way this one did.  I use this book over and over again with my creative writing students. Subtle, transformative and astonishingly compassionate, it is one of the books I wish I'd written.  What's not said here is as important as what is. Ishiguro's ability to indirectly reveal character and to delve into the unspoken, indeed, unacknowledged desires of these characters is inspiring.  At once political in the broad-brush strokes, and yet minutely detailed, it's one of those books you will remember and reread.
