Evening - Susan Minot Wonderful book. Minot's technique as a writer is impeccable and she uses all her skills to reveal a dying woman's state of mind. Her insights (always indirect and beautifully subtle) as to the nature of memory and what creates meaning in a life are -- dare I use the word? -- profound. I was far into the book before I realized a movie had been made of it. I recall the movie as acceptable, but not memorable and now I understand why: Minot's ability to create a nuanced, layered, utterly realistic internal world simply is not translatable to any other medium. This is the sort of storytelling for which books, and only books, will do. An important examination of what the hard task of dying is all about. Recommended.
