Year of Wonders - Geraldine Brooks

Book of wonders. Terrific on several levels -- it's a great story, first and foremost, with great characters about whom I cared deeply. The pacing is great, making it very hard to put down, even when I had my own writing to get back to! And it's larger, more sophisticated than it appears at first glance, being both an exploration of faith, courage, religion and one's personal assumptions about others.

Really, an excellent book. Highly recommended. I feel obliged to note that the NYTimes gave it a really snarky review, which only proves to me that snarky reviews in the NYTimes are not to be trusted.
