Under the Greenwood Tree - Thomas Hardy

A beautiful elegy to a lost time and place, this is the story of the romance between Dick Dewy, and the new school mistress, Fancy Day.  There is something a little melancholy about the book, but that in no way detracts from the enjoyment. Unabashedly a 'marriage plot' book (although with a twist), still Hardy doesn't shy away from questions of class and personal freedom. It's a splendidly written book, of course, and although there isn't a car chase or a vampire in the damn thing, I still found myself resenting time spent away from the story. Snort.
